Friday is National Donut Day!

Thanks to fsc and WeUseCoupons.com for this awesome treat!

I agree; it sounds made up. But Friday, June 4th's sugary celebration is actually a real holiday. In fact, since 1938, the first Friday in June has been celebrated as National Donut Day. Its beginnings were sweet and meaningful...and its modern-day meaning is pretty sweet too. National Donut Day now means a free-sugar-crawl around town grabbing up all of the free donuts that national and local chains offer. The holiday was initiated by the Salvation Army as a nod to the women who served donuts to soldiers during the first World War.

Now the two biggest names behind National Donut Day are Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts, both of whom will give you a free donut to enjoy on June 4, 2010. At Krispy Kreme the hot glazed deliciousness is truly free, no purchase necessary. At Dunkin Donuts you'll need to buy a drink in order to grab the freebie. Not a hardship for us, since it's impossible to walk out of DD without an iced coffee during the summer, anyway.

Check out Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts' National Donut Day pages for more information and to be sure that your store is participating.

National chains, however, aren't the only ones who will give you a little sugar come Friday. Last year we noted a number of local and regional donut shops that gave customers a National Donut Day freebie. So why not give the donut haunts in your town a ring to see if they're doing anything special to celebrate this auspicious occasion.....from Redplum.com!
